Moraga’s neighborhood names are real estate designations rather than official boundaries, but they track real differences. Rheem Valley — a separate community until it merged with Moraga in 1974 — is the town’s second retail and residential center, with Rheem Valley Manor on the rolling hills southeast of it. Campolindo fills wooded cul-de-sacs near Campolindo High School, most of it built in the 1960s and 1970s. Moraga Country Club is a gated, HOA-governed community of more than 500 homes built in phases from the early 1970s around a private golf course and clubhouse. Sanders Ranch and The Bluffs are gated enclaves of custom homes on half-acre to multi-acre lots, some with equestrian facilities, while Larch to the south is flatter and sidewalked. Canyon, over on the Oakland hills side, is a small unincorporated community outside town limits.

Ranch, Mediterranean, and Spanish Colonial styles dominate, and the town’s Design Review Board signs off on new homes and many additions — worth knowing before you plan an expansion. Moraga has no BART station of its own; Orinda and Lafayette are the nearest, usually under ten minutes’ drive from central Moraga and longer from outlying addresses, and County Connection Route 6 serves both. There is no direct Highway 24 on-ramp in town either — access runs through Orinda or along Moraga Way, a two-lane road that backs up with school and commute traffic. Treat trips into San Francisco as a range rather than a fixed number, since Caldecott Tunnel conditions are the biggest variable.

Schools split across two districts. Moraga School District covers kindergarten through eighth grade with three elementary schools — Camino Pablo, Donald L. Rheem, and Los Perales — all feeding Joaquin Moraga Intermediate. High school falls to the Acalanes Union High School District, which also serves Lafayette, Orinda, Walnut Creek, and Canyon. Campolindo High School sits on Moraga Road in town, but high school assignment follows the home address rather than the middle school, so some Moraga addresses are assigned to Miramonte in Orinda, and Campolindo’s attendance area reaches slightly past town limits. Elementary assignment is address-based as well — confirm the exact address with the district rather than assuming from the neighborhood.

Saint Mary’s College of California, on Saint Marys Road, has anchored the town since long before its subdivisions and shapes much of its cultural and athletic calendar. Moraga Commons Park is the central gathering place, with a bandshell, playground, picnic areas, and sports courts, and its free summer concert series has run for more than forty years. The Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail crosses town along St. Mary’s Road and links into the wider regional trail network. Shopping and dining stay concentrated in the Rheem Valley and Moraga shopping centers and are essentials-focused rather than a walkable downtown strip — part of why the town stays as quiet as it does.
