Lafayette isn’t one neighborhood — it’s several distinct pockets, each with its own character. Happy Valley, including Upper Happy Valley and Happy Valley Glen, is the city’s most sought-after address: large hillside lots that stay surprisingly close to Highway 24 and BART. Burton Valley is the family heartland, with flatter streets, ranch-style homes, and its own elementary school and swim clubs. Reliez Valley and Springhill lean more rural, with larger parcels bordering Pleasant Hill and, in places, room for horses. Downtown Lafayette and The Trails are the only truly walkable pocket of Lamorinda, with restaurants and shops a short walk from BART and connected to the rest of town by the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail.

Lafayette BART sits on the Antioch–SFO/Millbrae line, commonly reported at 30–35 minutes to downtown San Francisco and under 20 minutes to Oakland, with Highway 24 running directly through town toward the Caldecott Tunnel. Schools fall under the Lafayette School District for grades K–8 and the Acalanes Union High School District for grades 9–12, which also serves Moraga and Orinda. Outside of downtown, the Lafayette Reservoir’s paved Lakeside Trail and wooded Rim Trail draw walkers and joggers year-round.
